Epic Weekends & Dirty Butts
Three EPIC weekends in a row make for an amazing summer! EPIC weekend #3 is fresh in my mind and on my filthy clothes...here's a rundown. In Anchorage, we don't have the luxury of driving a couple of hours to hang out with our amazing family. But...we can hop a Friday afternoon flight and three hours later we're in Seattle and ready to roll. It's a beautiful thing, really. SYD and I flew down for a Dirty Dash race in McCleary, WA...not far from where we grew up. It's designed to be a 3 mile obstacle course with lots of mud, dirt, water, grit, etc.
We weren't sure what to expect from this race, but we knew we'd be dirty and our reward for the filthiness would be beers and burgers! If you have the chance - do a Dirty Dash race - you won't be disappointed. Well, unless you're afraid of mud pits, slip n' slides, or mud bombs! We signed up for the early heat, which turned out to be a great thing...but we'll get to that later. Our main concern upon arrival to the ORV park was our "over 21" wristbands...because we knew there was a beer chugging station.
Here we are before:
The first excitement came when our heat lined up for the start and they offered up a competition...chug a Rainier, run to the mud-pit, kiss said mud, and run back. Awesome start - SYD managed to be one of the first girls back and won a DD hoody. Then we were off!
They start you off running on this ORV track...about 1/2 mile or so, then you come to the first obstacle - a plywood wall to climb over. We stuck together and helped each other over. It was victorious as we pushed, pulled, and cheered each other on! Then to the first water obstacle...no kidding, it smelled like pure duck shit. We're up to our chest in duck-shit water, laughing hysterically about the smells that might linger...
More running and asking when the beer station will come up..."almost there", they would say. Liars. More mud, instant karma, crawling through culverts, climbing up muddy hills, sliding down muddy hills (ouch, that root hurt), walking up cargo nets. climbing over (or swimming under) sewer pipe, and then we hit the "slop n slide" area. Boo-yah! A giant slip n' slide for adults - need I say more? We all took off running and ended up pummeling into one another at the bottom...four BOOB check girls down.
More hysterical laughing...then onto the next one. Which turned out to be another wet, filthy pool where they set "bombs" off in your face. Try enjoying that while you're worried about losing your contacts! The weather was heating up to 90 degrees, so these ponds of mud weren't so bad!
After the water bombs, they take some pity on you and feed you beer. YUM. The last four obstacles; 18' tall cargo net wall and two 18' plywood walls were a little daunting and required concentration - since your hands are so filthy you're afraid you won't be able to grab the ropes.
Heather rocking the cargo net wall:
The finish is through another mud pit to cool you off and prep you for the photos...below. Fantastically fun race and I would do it again in a heartbeat! LOVED running with these girls! We spent the rest of our day in Summit Lake (stripping down and trying to wash the grit off) and devouring beers/burgers that were well deserved!

Yep, it was 8:30AM on a Saturday and we were amped up. Sure, there may have been tequila and vodka shots prior to...but who would blame us?! Plus they outfitted us with pig face tats...so we were feeling real tough! We took Alaska BOOB check tees with us - needed to represent!
