Tuesday Travel Rant

Did you know that Alaska is part of the US? I’ve blogged about it before…because we get the shaft when it comes to the price of plane tickets, shipping charges, and the not-so-fresh food that arrives here. I’m not complaining about living here – it’s an amazing, beautiful, diverse place - full of opportunity. I’m ranting about it today because the Pickle needs grandparent time, and to fly her to Portland or Indiana to see grandparents it’s HALF the cost of trying to fly her WITHIN the state of Alaska to see the other grandparents. How is that possible? Alaska Airlines…that’s how. Anchorage to Seattle is $203 r/t on JetBlue, but Anchorage to Ketchikan is $620 r/t (plus another $300 r/t in float plane rides to get to them). You actually fly over Ketchikan to get to Seattle. It’s awesome, right?

My other rant about the rest of the world thinking Alaska is a different country. My Instagram feed…these adorable designers make these “artsy” map prints, but they must think the contiguous states look really pretty as one piece…while Alaska and Hawaii are left as an afterthought…sometimes thrown on the bottom of the print. Most times, not. Our own Michael’s store in Anchorage sells such prints…throwing Alaska right down there by Hawaii. Hawaii doesn’t want our winters – as Pickle would say “cooome on…”. I am certainly not ragging on these designers, their work is beautiful and I understand that symmetrically AK and HI don’t’ fit nicely on the pages, but I’m a little worried that geographically peeps might be confused. I made a graphic, in case you have no idea what I’m talking about… J
