3 EASY DIY gifts for your SSF (super special friends)!
It's December 9th and I realize that I've been lollygagging around the holiday shopping, mostly busy unpacking the house and setting up the craft shop. AND the "online coupon/non-black friday extravaganza" packages have arrived...lo and behold, I don't have all of the shopping done. Well shiiiite. This leaves me no choice but to start emergency crafting. Since there are only two followers to my lovely blog, I'm doing this for my own edification. :) Here is a list of DIY projects that anyone can make. It may require a trip to the craft store, secondhand store or the kitchen...no big deal!
#1 - Record Bowls
These are so much fun to watch while they melt - you only need an oven, a cookie sheet and some apparatus to use to shape! Don't forget your oven mitts! Here's an easy to follow tutorial. I like to finish mine off with a piece of felt or cork glued to the bottom (E6000 is the bomb-diggity glue).
**If you have concerns about melting vinyl in your oven and/or melting plastic...go here.
#2 - Homemade Lunch Bags (and/or shopping bags)
Most of us are becoming increasingly eco-conscious and carrying a cute lunch bag and/or shopping bag is one small way to do our parts. Mind you, I still drive a gas-guzzling SUV, so this is a small part. :) Lemon Squeezy has provided a fantastic, basic lunch bag tutorial here. She even provides some PDF patterns!
WHOA - there are a lot of great and free shopping sack tutorials out there - this link will take you to several cool ones. This one, by Martha Stewart is funny...and superbly easy! I am a huge fan of creating out of old bed sheets and pillowcases - this tute gives you the rundown on turning a pillowcase into a shopping bag! How's that for recycling!
#3 - Homemade Sugar Scrub
As discussed in my previous post, we are concocting homemade body goodness tonight. Sugar scrub makes everyone happy...especially when it smells delicious! Our cool Alaska weather creates lovely, flaky skin that welcomes a sugar scrub! This is the recipe we will be using tonight courtesy of Daily Worth:
And seriously, my seven year old niece could whip this up. We plan to package in fun metal tins and mason jars. Should be a fabulous time!
Okay...all two of you, tune in tomorrow for more fun! :)

Makes 1-3 scrubs, depending on jar size. This recipe is easily doubled, tripled, quadrupled or more!
Time: approximately 5 minutes
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1 cup olive oil
- 1/2 cup water soluble castor oil (optional, but cuts down on the slippery shower effect of the olive oil)
- 2-3 drops each of vanilla and almond essential oil (can use just almond, as vanilla can be harder to find and more expensive)
And seriously, my seven year old niece could whip this up. We plan to package in fun metal tins and mason jars. Should be a fabulous time!
